Uighur anxiety boils over

The riots were triggered by a Han Chinese onset on Uighur workers at a imitation factory in Guangdong Province. Many Uighur workers were killed or injured. Sunday's riots invited a stronger repulsion from Han Chinese. Tens of thousands of Han Chinese took to the streets in Urumqi in dissent on Tuesday.

Reports said some of them attacked Uighur-owned businesses. A strained lay of the land in the locality is probably to remain. In March 2008, China apothegm large-scale riots by Tibetans followed, in the next few months, by activities by Uighur separatists. Xinjiang authorities asseverate that Sunday's riots were organized by a Munich-based Uighur autarchy troop and by Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, an exiled Uighur rights activist living in the United States.

It is clear-cut that behind Sunday's riots are long-held enmities against the influx of Han Chinese and the Chinese government's attempts to assimilate Uighur commonalty into Chinese sophistication and prevent their rights to forwardness of faith and expression. A crackdown on Uighur activities will further reinforce ethnic tension. Chinese authorities should be aware of that the example riots and end year's riots by Tibetans glean from the same roots.
